After
the last Number of TOUGOUDOUM, let's have a look on the TERNARY BARS, while
visiting THE DOT (that we will study in detail later).
Thus, in the ternary bars, the time
(the beat) is equivalent to a dotted value (lengthened half of his value).
Every time is therefore divisible not by two (as in the binary bar) but by
three. One says that the time and the bar are ternary.

THE
RIM SHOT
The
Rim Shot technique consists in hitting at the same time the head and the rim
of the drum. The obtained sound is then more powerful and slamming. At the moment
of the strike, watch to maintain firmly the pinch with the thumb and the index
and to close the other fingers on the stick.
Notice :
>
The Rim Shot is often written with an
accent, even if the accent itself may not be played in Rim Shot. Trust your
ears to recognize it.
>
One calls often Rim Shot the technique
which consists in to put the stick on the head and hit the rim, but of which
the effect is totally different. It is a matter there of the Stick Shot, of
which we will evoke another time.
Using
the Rim Shot around the kit :
And
as always, practise slowly, first on the snaredrum.
THE
BLUES
The
Blues was born in the United States during the 19th century in the suffering
of millions of slaves deported from Africa. Even if his rhythmic and harmony
are relatively simple, it generated or influenced most of the musics of the
20th century (Jazz, Rock, Reggae, Rap).

NUMBERS :

the top number indicates the quantity of reference value
(here the EIGHTH)
>
the bottom number indicates the
value of the THIRD OF A TIME and
not the value of a time as in the binary bars.
Been
born in Alexandria on 07/16/1952, Stewart Copeland is one of the most creative
drummers of his generation.
Tus
the trio (completed by the guitarist Andy Summers)
recorded many "hits" from 1979 to 1984, with the passing
of its five albums : from Roxanne to King of Pain or from Message in a bottle
to Don't stand so close to me.
THE DOT is a musical "extending"
sign that lengthens the note of the half of his value.

Ray Bauduc is considered as one of the
most important drummers "New orleans" (years 20), with Baby
Dodds and Zutty Singleton.
Besides his talents of musician, Ray
Bauduc had another passion : do-it-yourself. Thus he loved to repair the other
drummers equipment ! This is on his indications that was created the first
sizzled cymbal (provided with small nails) in the years 30. He even created
an original bassdrum pedal model, the famous "Speed King Pedal",
which is still marketed today.
The case of Ray Bauduc perfectly illustrates
the role and the life of the drummer/ inventor, constantly trying to perfect
and personalize his instrument.
TAKE YOUR TOOLS !
Mixing
Punk, Reggae and World Music, the group has created an absolutely unique sound
that some called "white Reggae".
Besides,
he revealed himself to be an inspired composer, participating in the writing
of many Police works and recording a first album solo as early as 1980, under
the pseudonym of Klark Kent. He has since written several musics of documentaries
films and especially BO of films as Walk Street, Raining Stones or Ramble Fish,
for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination.
Continuing
to travel, notably in Africa, he works for a number of years in collaboration
with the opera of Cleveland or the Ballet of San Francisco for creations. His
composer and drummer activity continues equally in several formations, such
Oysterhead or Animal Logic. Even if today his creativity reveals itself more
in his composer work, Stewart Copeland remains an essential reference for the
drummers.
For
its part, the Steward Copeland's play , from Punk inspiration at the beginning,
is strongly impregnated with Reggae. Great admirer of Carlton Barrett (drummer
of the Bob Marley's Wailers), he constructed a powerful and extremely subtle
play, in particular at the bassdrum and the hit-hat.
After
living his childhood in the Middle East according to his father's trips (who
was a CIA agent), he attended college in California before leaving to England
in 1975.
After
the dissolution of a first group (Curved Air),ha has founded, with the bass
player /singer Sting, one of the more popular and innovative groupsof the end
of the 70s/ beginning 80s : the band POLICE.
Tightly
linked to the chant, the blues rhythmic is ternary, generally in 12/8 (4 times

You
will see that with this gear, you will have also the occasion to help the singer
or the guitarist, who usually have a less provident nature !
The
drummer is very often force to mend his drumset, wether during repetitions,
on stage or in studio. Indeed he may have to change a head, replace a screw
or eliminate a vibration on a tom. It is therefore useful, indeed necessary,
to have with you a "first-aid kit" with for example the following
elements :
The Rim Shot is a strike technique used
in all style and during all the eras of the history of the drums. It is today
omnipresent on the 2nd and 4th time on the snaredrum in the domain of Rock
or Funk.
We will evoke here the blues rhythmic
