Lars Ulrich - Metallica
Polyvalent, able to play in all style and to adapt to machine
Mike Portnoy is one of the leaders of the new generation.

The Rock is still there too, with many forms, and Igor Cavalera within Sepultura or Lars Ulrich with Metallica continue the history with an extremist-powerful play and a "muscular" bassdrum twin pedal.

The drummer still surrounds himself with accessories according to the style : concert toms, rototoms, bells ; the drums still keeps beautiful colors.

For some the hour is not always to delicacy : this is the time of "groove" and watts. The "techno" music proved that it could impose as a musical kind but all the musics have not the votes of masses nor the same relations with the record companies...

The drums, as for it, adapts since always to every new context. Their history is short but eventful and no doubts that they will be able to evolve with the music of their time.

History
Since several years, the borders stretch to obliterate itself
with the mix of many trains and the discovery of musics until then less accessible (musics of East Europe, Africa ...).
Many styles are created, sometimes the time of a fashion or by a deeper manner, as the Hip Hop, the Progressive Rock, the Acid Jazz...
The drummer transforms his play, sometimes suffering from the constraints of the progress (one wants the "big sound" and plays less the wire brushes...) but freing himself from the uniquely rhythmic role where he remained stationed a long time to exploit his creativity.
Of course, the acoustic music still live and great drummers like Daniel Humair, André Ceccarelli or Dennis Chambers contribute to the evolution of the instrument by the creation of a personal play. The multiplication of the schools allows hearing excellents drummers, heirs of a one-hundred year history.
