Despite the refusal of certain drummers of the "old guard", such Baby Dodds, to use the hi-hat pedal, the drummers of the new generation themselves appropriated it and began the exploration of its rhythmic and harmonic possibilities.
Quickly appeared the first masters of the wire brushes :Kaiser Marshall , Fletcher Henderson's drummer, and Chick Web in his Big Band figure among the drummers more representative from this time.
The creation of the big orchestra led the drummer to diversify his play and the choice of its sounds. The drums were completed with a wider cymbal (the ride), the bassdrum remained imposing and the woodblocks and other cow bells multiplied.
Simultaneously, the Jazz and its musicians suffered from the economical crisis of 1929 and all did not rediscover any work. This is the case of the famous King Oliver that worked as a taxi driver and grocer at the end of his life. Some musicians were successful again at the time of the New orleans "Revival" in the 40's....
